Why Windows 7 Is Still in Service
Windows 7 was released in October 2009, and Microsoft ended extended support in January 2020. It remains in production use where test systems, machine-vision stations, CNC controllers and laboratory instruments were validated on Windows 7 with PCI interface cards whose drivers were never updated for Windows 10. These systems usually run offline or on isolated networks. What they need is new hardware that still installs Windows 7 and still has the PCI slots and serial ports the application uses.

How to Choose
- ISA cards. If the Windows 7 application uses an ISA card, only the 945GV systems (NX-i95, NX-i295, NX-i395, NX-i495) apply.
- PCI cards. Five PCI slots are available on the NX786-T90, NX75-T90, NX75-R and the 945GV systems. The NX781-T90 has 4.
- Serial ports. Six serial ports are available on the NX586 series, NX781-T90 and NX75-R.
- Operating system roadmap. For a later move to Windows 11, choose the NX110 or NX81. For systems that must also run Windows XP, choose the NX81, NX581, NX75 or NX781.
- Enclosure. Rackmount chassis are available as the NX110-R, NX75-R and the 945GV rackmount models.
Windows 7 on New Hardware: What to Plan For
- USB 3.0 during installation. Windows 7 has no built-in USB 3.0 (xHCI) driver. On newer platforms, keyboards, mice and USB installation media may not work during setup unless the driver is added. Confirm installation with NIXSYS.
- Boot drive. Windows 7 has no built-in NVMe driver. A SATA boot drive avoids the problem.
- 32-bit or 64-bit. Drivers for older PCI cards are often 32-bit only, and 64-bit Windows 7 requires signed 64-bit drivers. Confirm which edition the card's drivers support before ordering.
- Drivers and configuration. Collect the drivers, software and configuration files for every card from the existing machine before it is decommissioned.
